Birth Month Flower series: November
The eleventh month, November, features the Peony flower.
Design notes:
Peony blossoms unfurl in layered, painterly strokes—soft petals rendered in blush pinks, coral, and ivory, edged with hints of warm mauve. Each bloom captures the peony’s lush volume: overlapping curves, subtle translucence where light passes through the thinner petals, and shadowed folds near the center that suggest depth and density. Paired with a bud partially opened flower add variety to the composition, the tighter form contrasting with the full, ruffled head.
The stems and leaves are suggested rather than literal—broad, loose brushwork in sage, muted olive anchors the flowers without competing for attention. Thin veins and quick, darker accents provide structure while maintaining an overall soft impression.
The background is abstract and textural with broad brush marks, patterns and a tactile surface. Areas of more opaque pigment are balanced by translucent glazes, producing depth and a sense of atmospheric space behind the floral forms.
Compositionally, the flowers cluster slightly off-center to create visual interest, with negative space around them to let the eye rest.
The overall mood is elegant and serene—celebratory of the peony’s lush beauty while grounded by a contemporary, abstract setting.
4”x12” acrylic painting on canvas, includes a summary of the flower and symbolic associations
“Peonies are perennial flowering bushes that bloom late spring to early summer. The flowers have full showy petals that can be single, semi, or double with large lobed leaves. They come in a variety of colors from shades of white, pink, red, and yellow and have a sweet fragrance.
Peony flowers represent prosperity, good fortune, and happiness. Some believe they bring protection and ward off evil spirits. “
