Birth Month Flower series: July

$125.00

The seventh in the series, July, features the Larkspur flower.

Design notes:

  • The composition centers on a cluster of larkspur stems that are rendered with delicate attention with tall spikes of blossoms ranging from soft periwinkle to saturated cobalt blue. Some blossoms face forward, others tilt away, and a few buds remain closed—small hints of future bloom. Subtle variations in value and temperature on each petal give the flowers volume without heavy modeling; the overall effect is airy and botanical rather than hyperreal.

  • The background is abstract and expressive, composed of layered washes and textured marks and patterns. Compositionally, the flowers occupy a clear foreground plane while the abstract background recedes by virtue of cooler, desaturated tones and softer edges.

  • The overall mood is contemplative and fresh. The painting balances botanical clarity with painterly freedom: the larkspur are identifiable and elegant, while the abstract background contributes atmosphere and movement without overwhelming the subject.

  • 4”x12” acrylic painting on canvas, includes a summary about the flower and its symbolic significance

“Larkspur are summer blooming perennials with tall showy flower spikes with deep lobed leaves. The flowers are arranged in dense, elongated clusters along the stem and are available in a variety of colors, including blue, purple, pink, and white.

Larkspur are believed to have protective qualities, some cultures used it to ward off evil spirits and keep venomous creatures at bay. Larkspur is said to hold many symbolic meanings from bravery, protection, and an open heart and carefree spirit.”
