Design notes:
The composition centers on a cluster of larkspur stems that are rendered with delicate attention with tall spikes of blossoms ranging from soft periwinkle to saturated cobalt blue. Some blossoms face forward, others tilt away, and a few buds remain closed—small hints of future bloom. Subtle variations in value and temperature on each petal give the flowers volume without heavy modeling; the overall effect is airy and botanical rather than hyperreal.
The background is abstract and expressive, composed of layered washes and textured marks and patterns. Compositionally, the flowers occupy a clear foreground plane while the abstract background recedes by virtue of cooler, desaturated tones and softer edges.
